Control Your Diabetes with the Right Diet. They say that approximately 12 million people in the U.S. are believed to have diabetes.
And over half have been diagnosed and are being treated for the disease. Only a fraction of the six million people who are being treated have been taught the basic “self-care” skills necessary for treatment of diabetes.
An element that is very essential to successfully treating diabetes, yet is the most difficult to manage is the diet. Diabetics can reduce their risk of complications like heart, kidney and eye disease by learning one essential skill and that is how to eat properly.
Your doctor should teach you how to balance your medicine, exercise and food to maintain the right blood sugar level.
Diabetics need the following:
- The right amount of calories to maintain a reasonable weight.
- Enough high-fiber carbohydrates, such as whole-grain cereals and breads, to provide about 55 to 60 percent of calories.
- Enough protein (eggs, milk, meat, and fish) to provide about 12 to 22 percent of calories.
- Fats to provide less than 30 percent of calories; in addition, less than 10 percent from saturated fats like eggs, butter, cheese, and meats.
If your doctor say that you are a Type-I diabetic, that means that you must eat right and have insulin shots daily to control your diabetes.
But, Type-II diabetics might be able to keep the right balance of blood sugar just by eating properly, without having to take insulin.
To coordinate your diet with your insulin shots, your doctor or nutritionist will probably recommend that you eat three small meals and three snacks each day.
The main goal is for you and your doctor to design a diet plan that you feel comfortable with and that will fit your lifestyle. The diet can also help diabetics avoid many of the complications associated with diabetes.
